You're the type of people who are interested in bettering the world. You're possible the least nerdy of them all; unless you participate in other activies that paled your nerdiness compared to your involvement in social activities. Emma's First Fight Report! (Live and In Concert)

Mar. 9th, 2007 | 02:41 am
location: In the dark by my desk
mood: optimistic optimistic
music: Boats and Birds - Gregory and the Hawk

Kitchener/Waterloo

Fighting: Sir Bess, Sir Ed the Red, Master Trumbrand, Kayla the Cheerful, Mo, Man with pretty gothic plate and a gold V on his tunic, Cheerful squire in a purple tunic with plaid pants, long blonde-haired man with many piercings and a red and white sheild that I can't beleive I've forgotten his name, and New fighter in translucent plastic legs and purpley blue gambeson. I am horrid with names. :( But it was a great turnout and lots of good fighting.

Sir Bess drove me to fight practice :D! For which I am eternally greatful. She is a wonderful lady, and easy to talk to. We got there early after listening to Great Big Sea. Fought a few rounds with Mo and Kayla to warm up. Kayla—“I like a woman who puts on lipstick before getting in armour” :P.

Fought with Sir Bess. Worked on moving my shield down to protect the leg, along with moving it back. Noticed that I was doing a Bettie Page pinup pose thing by popping my shield-leg right to “escape” the blow. It doesn’t work, to say the least. So we tried it…and it didn’t work. And then it clicked and the pieces and instinct and mindset fell into place and I blocked it consistently after that. Triumph!!! *un-fighter chick dance*.

Then I did some sword and shield on two-stick with Kayla. I hit her without success for a few rounds. Then we talked about what to do against a case. No shield sweeps. They’re usually bigger and stronger than you and it doesn’t work. So…sweep them aside with your sword, and hit the side of the helm while their swords are down. Or, wait for the A to fall into a V—something that happens when your opponent is tired, occupied, or forced by you into that position. Then, take the pipe. Beautiful! It’s good to know what to look for. We also worked on what to do when you take someone’s legs…tricky! Lastly, we worked on doing a few shots and then getting out of range. This is something I have a huge issue with, but I felt like I was getting it at the end. Oh! And we worked on some thrusts….palm up to the grill, palm out to the body and gut. Learned a lot…most of all to be smart, and think when fighting…I started to think, to analyse what I’m doing, what they’re doing, how they’re reacting, and what I’m “telling” them…which is amazing.

My third round was with Master Trumbrand—sword and board. I died a lot. We worked on the rising thrust…that the same downwards movement can turn into a leg snap, a head snap, a face thrust or a body thrust, depending on how your opponent moves. And they don’t know which one you’re going to do. Twist down on thrusts so it doesn't skip up. Also, he showed me how to move right and hit left…clever. Because the opponent thinks you’re going to hit right when you move right, and compensates with sword and shield, leaving the left side of their body open. Also, he noticed that when I move, I move forwards and backwards, but not side to side or around. This was also really good to notice. Smart fighting=good fighting.

My last bout was with Sir Ed. He fought with shield and buckler. So frustrating. Tallness + buckler on really long arm = Emma swinging into the nothingness where Ed isn't :P. After much flailing, I managed to leg him, and we worked on immobilizing the sword with a shield or a shot, moving in and hitting lots. Kayla mentioned that earlier—don’t let your sword be immobilized, and hit them when they’re approaching you. He hit me many times in the head, which happened when I went for his leg and left my head open. He pointed out that this is a good tactic…take the head when they go for the leg. Or, as Trumbrand pointed out, go for the arm if you can hook the sword downwards.

Such an excellent fight practice and I can’t wait to do more fighting next week! This worked out so well. Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

Knight, Teacher and Friend

Dec. 5th, 2006 | 09:51 am

The first time I met Sarnac was my second event fighting. Pickups pointed out that I was not moving my hips at the same time as my arm. I felt a tap on my shoulder. A knight motioned me out of the list and demonstrated that if I held a towel behind my back and an end in each hand, I could practice feeling that movement. It was such an amazing revelation—I was actually moving my hip and arm at the same time for the first time ever. Then Sarnac stepped back and tipped over a beer, and Sarnac, Jo and I, laughing, scrambled to get paper towels from the kitchen after a lesson I will never forget.

I saw Sarnac several times after that—on the list, making his twisted Dooley’s and Iguana drinks, organizing the Novice tourney. We talked—about what it means to be a fighter. I learned many lessons on a wooden bench this summer—that life comes first, always. That loving every minute of being on the field is more important than winning on it. That the relationship between a man at arms and their liege is one of family—so choose wisely. Most importantly, that fighting is about being the best fighter you can possibly be, not being a knight or a king.

The last time I saw Sarnac, he was in front of his dependents, making arrangements to get me a tunic in his colours, telling Thord and Kellen and Wulfy and I how proud he was with our fighting that day. I will miss this great man with a greater heart sorely. He was a noble knight, an enthusiastic teacher and a great friend. And I see him still—in the hearts of his family, in the tears on my cheeks, in the honour of those he taught, and in the minds of us all.

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

This year I've been busy!

In April I punched [info]bigguy23 in the arm (-10 points). In May I bought porn for [info]mahault (10 points). In October I stole [info]donnerfaust's purse (-30 points). In August I gave [info]rhisiart a life-saving blood transfusion (50 points). Last Monday I donated bone marrow to [info]canker_canison in a life-saving procedure (300 points).

Overall, I've been nice (320 points). For Christmas I deserve a Wii!

Sincerely,
ladysabre

Yeah...I can't really see Wulfy with a purse. But then again, I couldn't see Dag with a goldilocks basket. You and J can share my "hat" as a replacement Wulfy lol. Sorry 'bout the arm, B. At least you were wearing armour :P.

You scored as VIII - Strength. Strength is not just physical strength, it also means emotional and spiritual strength. It is the Strength to do what you know is right in the face of opposition. Strength to defy convention and authority. Stength does not have to be used directly. It can be inner strength that supports one in the face of attacks on what they hold dear. The person of Strength remains true to their beliefs. In a Tarot reading, this card can indicate overcoming of obstacles and refusal to be beaten down. If badly aspected this card can indicate loss of faith, failure of Will.

Feast of the Bear

Nov. 6th, 2006 | 11:10 pm

What an beautiful day!! Freezing though. I didn't get fully kitted up so that I could watch Quill authorize. I'm so proud of him. He works hard, learns fast, fights strongly and upholds honour. I was happy to have been there. After Quill got his auth and we can now finally hit him with real sticks legally (YAY!) I put on the rest of my kit. This took some doing cuz it was so cold my fingers couldn't do up the buckles and ties on my armour. Finally though (and with a bit of help from someone who had their fingers under a cloak for the morning) I got onto the list field. Did pickups with Dag before before the Royal Tournament started. A good fight with Trumbrand and I actually managed to last for a bit before I died this time! So that was amazing. I had another long-lasting fight with a fighter in red and white. Finally he beat me and I was out. Thankfully there was a lot more fighting! I watched the rest of the tournament--Bubba won second! I was so happy. That's two seconds in a row and we both fought in both the tournaments so extra points for that. Good news. In the warlord tourney I had fun getting hit...memories of Pennsic! Some interesting strategies and there were enough of us happy to fight melees forever that we had some pretty dramatic battles. I lasted to the end of one which was a new thing. But I have some awesome welts from the melees *grin* (I think it was Luke's wrap that did it). Berus and Worgan begged the boon for Etienne to the King as the next of Ealdormere's knights. Being there was indescribable. I was really happy--he's done some amazing teaching with Quill and he's a great fighter. Then I got in the line for Evander's 40 minutes for 40 years party. I kept coming back...no kills but I did leg him and I was reminded to protect my head again. Yep. Still need to work on that one--And crouching instead of using a shield. When Evander's 40 were up, I did some singles with the new knight--Ewen? He showed me step-by-step wraps and when to use them, what a moulinet is and how to control the fight from your knees. Educational and I hope I can use it soon. I fought Quill for a bit and then fought Wulfy to end the day. We had some good rounds though I think we were both tired..."three rounds. Okay. One more. Nah, One more. Maybe another?" Lovely. Then I packed up my kit and got dressed for the evening. Great feast! Fun to spend some time with Debbie, whose roommate knows Bjarn...oh small worlds! And it was good to talk to Misty and Ludwig again, and lots of lovely people who I haven't gotten to talk to in a while. Court was fun cuz J trying not to squeak every time s/o said "the right to bear arms"--"hehehehe I'm glad I have my AOA!!" And Mavie and her bunny ears. It was such a beautiful event. And back to Dag's for the halloween party. I tried to be Marilyn but I decided it was a good thing she was a natural blonde cuz the wig was itchy. French Toast and bacon and coffee...it seems to be a tradition for the day after the event! No comedy network this time. Just Quill and Anna and fighting over the couch which was more fun. It turns out that I knew Jake's sister from highschool...I guess we all end up scadian eventually. Then Wulfy and J gave me a ride home and we had a few issues finding Guelph but we got here eventually. Good time. I love that event and I hate to see it go. I think next I need to work on my thrust...

I'm a Vampire!!

Nov. 5th, 2006 | 09:35 pm

You scored as Brujah. You belong to the Brujah bloodline: the punks, rabble, and anarchists of the vampire underworld. The Brujah often have a score to settle with someone upstairs and aren't afraid to get their hands dirty. While they are very passionate about their beleifs, they are often so volatile that they can't stop fighting amongst themselves long enough to organize anything more than a brawl.
